Diemel Dominates RCS

Menomonie, Wisconsin (May 06, 2016) Friday, May 06, 2016, the Red Cedar Speedway saw unseasonably warm weather and changing track conditions as they put on their weekly show sponsored by Hauk Motorsports.  Seven classes of cars were in attendance as the Hornets, Pure Stocks, and the WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Modifieds, and Late Models took to the track.   Feature winners included AJ Diemel, Ashley Anderson, Curt Meyers, Shane Halopka, Mike Knudtson, Jeremy Dahl, and William Voeltz.

The T.L. Sinz Plumbing Late Models were paced by Mike Prochnow and Chad Mahder as Prochnow took the lead at the green.  Fifth starting AJ Diemel was on rails as he ran down second place John Kaanta and set sail for the leader.  Diemel caught Prochnow and a spirited battle for the point ensued.  On lap seven, Diemel was side by side and edging into the lead as he spun after contact coming off of turn two.  It was Prochnow tagged with the caution and on the restart, Diemel drove away from the pack to an eventual straightaway win over Jimmy Mars who had moved to second after a battle with Kaanta for the position.  Kaanta finished a strong third over Ricky Hanestad and Jake Redetzke.

The Tim’s Automotive Modifieds were paced by Kerry Halopka and Mike Anderson as Halopka took the early lead and Cory Mahder used the low line to move into second.  Mahder continued his strong drive under Halopka for the lead as Mike Anderson followed into second and Ashley Anderson moved to third.  Mahder looked comfortable when he blew a tire and came to a stop on lap eight of 18.  Mike Anderson took over the front position and he too looked strong as the race continued on.  Kevin Adams car was upset with contact with a tire in the corner as he spun and collected Darrell Nelson on lap ten.  It was Mike Anderson again as Halopka tried to make the highline work and battle for the lead.  Ashley Anderson found the quicker line through the middle and overtook second and moved to the lead with two laps remaining.  Ashley Anderson drove home to his third feature win overall on the season as Mike Anderson finished in the runner up position.  Matt Leer used a late charge to finish third over a hard charging Jay Richardson and Nelson in fifth.

The Johnson Motors Super Stocks saw pole sitter Rick Hallquist unable to make the call as the reshuffled order saw them led to green by Luke Schultz and Tony Falkner in the feature action.  The yellow flew before a lap was scored as a spinning Kyle Helling collected Adam Soltis.  On the second try, Falkner took the lead but seventh starting Curt Myers only took two laps to drive to the front.  Gunnar Watkins settled into second as Jesse Redetzke and Bart Steffen followed.  Luke Schultz drew the yellow as he hooked a tire in turn three sending his car out into the path of Falkner.  The caution eliminated Myers’s huge lead but it was merely a short delay in his dominance.  At the checkered flag, it was Myers unchallenged as Redetzke won a good battle for second position over Watkins.  Lucas Plank finished fourth over Steffen.

The Southworth Chevrolet Midwest Modifieds saw 23 cars take the green at feature time as Tyler Werner was flanked by Tyler Byholm in the front row.  The initial start saw Jack Barta spinning, drawing the yellow and a complete restart.  The second attempt looked good but Steve Hass lost a wheel before a lap was scored.  The third time was a charm as Byholm moved out into the lead.  Shane Halopka found his way to second and David Swearingen moved to third.  A caution for a pair of 15’s saw Barta return to his position and Karl Kolek head to the pits.

Halopka used the restart to overtake the lead and shortly after, a multi car crash drew a red flag condition eliminating Jesse Bryan and Bob Wood as Mitchel Booth was charged with the foul.  The race restarted and saw Halopka drive to the victory as Michael Truscott used a last lap pass over Byholm for second.  Nick Koehler and Clark Schwartz rounded out the top five.

The Conrad’s Auto Salvage Street Stock feature saw Donald Cook and Hunter VanGilder in the front row.  VanGilder drove to the lead as Michael Knudtson spun and collected the remaining cars in the field.  Ron Hanestad went to the work area but wasn’t able to return to racing action. VanGilder again led on the green as Knudtson moved to second.  A spinning Donald Cook drew the caution and Cook retired.  VanGilder led the restart but Knudtson challenged both high then low before taking the position and driving on to the win.  It was VanGilder in second comfortably over Kyle Genett in third.

The Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stocks saw Jeff Tisdale and James Thur in the front row at the drop of the green.  It was Tisdale early as he raced with Jeremy Dahl for the lead.  Dahl took the point as Kent Harmon closed into second.  Harmon moved to the higher groove as the two raced side by side for the front spot.  Harmon edged into the lead with two laps to go when suddenly smoke billowed from his engine bay and he slowed to a stop, drawing the yellow flag.  It was Dahl unchallenged over the green, white, checkered finish as Brett Meyer came home second over Tisdale and Thur.

The WAYY 790 Hornets were led to green by Ross Hoffman and Matthew Scott as the first attempt at a start was slowed due to debris.  It was Hoffman earning the point as sixth starting William Voeltz closed to second and spun with the help of Armond Love.  Voeltz used the restart to dart into the lead and drive away to a commanding lead and on to the checkered flag.  Shadow Kitchner held second until Derrick Johnson took the position.  It was Kitchner finishing third over a recovering Love and Bradley York.

The Red Cedar Speedway returns to racing action on Friday, May 13, 2016, with the WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, and Late Models along with the Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stocks and Value Implement Hornets.  There will be no Modifieds on the card as Kid's Club Night presented by Conrad's Auto Salvage and Thunder Hill Speedway sponsor the action.
